Overview

Nestled in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, Tulian Lake lies approximately 16 km southwest of Pahalgam, between the Pir Panjal and Zanskar ranges. Starting from Pahalgam—around 95 km from Srinagar—this trek offers a perfect balance of adventure and accessibility.

Though located at a high altitude, the Tulian Lake Trek is shorter and less demanding than many other Himalayan treks, making it ideal for trekkers seeking stunning scenery without extreme difficulty. The trail passes through lush meadows, dense forests, and alpine valleys dotted with pine, fir, chir, and spruce trees—vegetation rarely seen together on other Kashmir treks.

The highlight is the mesmerizing turquoise-blue Tulian Lake, set against snow-clad peaks. The trek also offers a unique cultural experience, with chances to meet Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes who graze their livestock in these high-altitude meadows during summer.

Itinerary

Drive Distance: 90 km
Drive Duration: 2–3 hours
Trek Distance: 5 km
Trek Duration: ~4 hours
Maximum Altitude: 8,300 ft

Meet our representative in Srinagar and drive to Pahalgam. We strongly recommend arriving in Srinagar at least one day before the trek to avoid missing the scheduled pickup.

The drive itself is scenic, passing through the saffron fields of Pampore and following the Lidder River near Pahalgam. After reaching Ganeshbal, a village 2 km from Pahalgam, you will meet the trekking team. After a short tea break and trek briefing, begin your trek.

The trail starts through a beautiful spruce forest with a gentle ascent towards Deno Valley. En route, you’ll pass a clearing with small dhabas and cross a stream. A river flowing from Tulian Lake runs alongside parts of the trail. As you approach Deno Valley, vast meadows framed by the Pir Panjal and Himalayan ranges come into view, with grazing cattle and horses.

The campsite is located about 2 km uphill, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding valley. Enjoy the evening amidst lush meadows, wildflowers, and panoramic views of Pahalgam before spending the night under the stars.

Trek Distance: 11 km
Trek Duration: ~8 hours
Maximum Altitude: 10,600 ft

This is the longest trekking day, so an early start is essential. After breakfast, retrace your path briefly from Deno Valley towards Chutiyaal Meadow, crossing a forested stretch and a small stream. Take a short break here before continuing.

Re-enter the forest and trek for about 1 km to reach Baisaran Meadow (Mini Switzerland). Due to crowds during peak season, we continue onward after a short halt.

From Baisaran, the trail ascends through spruce and fir forests toward Kanimool, with occasional Gujjar huts along the way. The final stretch involves a steep 4 km climb through dense jungle to Tulian Marg. The trail can be slippery, so caution is advised.

After 3–4 hours, arrive at the stunning Tulian Valley, a pristine alpine landscape with open grasslands, cold streams, and stone huts. This will be your campsite for the next two nights. Rest and acclimatize.

Trek Distance: 5 km
Trek Duration: 3–4 hours
Maximum Altitude: 12,100 ft

Wake up to spectacular views of snow-capped peaks glowing in the morning light. After breakfast, begin the much-awaited ascent to Tulian Lake.

The trail is short but steep, passing through rocky terrain. Walk at a steady pace, taking breaks as needed. As you climb higher, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains unfold.

Upon reaching Tulian Lake, you are greeted by crystal-clear turquoise waters reflecting the towering peaks around it. Spend time exploring the lake from different viewpoints, soaking in its serene beauty, and capturing photographs.

After a few hours, descend carefully back to Tulian Valley. The evening is free to relax and reflect on the day’s achievement while enjoying another peaceful night at camp.

After breakfast, break camp and begin the descent to Ganeshbal, Pahalgam. The 8.5 km trek takes approximately 4 hours. Though downhill, some steep sections require careful footing.

Pause occasionally to admire the Tulian Valley one last time and reflect on the journey. Stay alert for livestock and wildlife along the route.

Upon reaching Ganeshbal, a vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to Srinagar, marking the end of the Tulian Lake Trek. While the trek concludes here, the memories and experiences will stay with you long after.
